Positive Ideas

What would you like to see done with the site of Lake East Hospital. We hear so much negative about the move, like we could change it now, and I was curious what good might come out of this. I am not ignoring the obvious here, just hoping to spur some good conversation.

I personally would like to see the City enter into a contract with a builder that would work on some type of urban living situation. Classy apartments, some small businesses, eateries and the like. Maybe you have other ides that I never thought of. JT

JT, I like your idea, however, I worry that the storefronts would sit empty. Not trying to be pessimistic but, there are so many storefronts (Main St. - Victoria Place) that are empty.
Some nice eateries would be great, though. Having small children, I would like to see some 'kid oriented' places - maybe a play place for them like 'Zero Gravity'. A nice book store like Barnes and Noble or Borders would be great - a place to grab a cup of coffee and hang out.

Well with every good idea there has to be a plan. Well I would think that the City would have to make the existing properties more inviting somehow. Maybe some breaks or incentives, but something to get them in there. Maybe assist with small business loan to get them going, who knows.

I would think that you need to get hold of a developer that wants to invest. in the area. One that is in bed with some big business like you said, Barnes and Noble, things like that, where people know already and may support more willingly. The businesses need to start small. Some start out so huge and can not afford the rental payments per square foot, which is at a premium. Maybe that value needs revisited? I would not think your ideas to be pessimistic at all, just realistic and forward thinking.

I really like the idea of the kid stuff also. Maybe even a "Once upon a child" consignment shop like in Mentor, they do pretty well there. Thanks again. JT

Here comes killjoy. Want to build classy apartments overlooking a parking garage and a low income apartment building?Painesville has the lowest per capitia income in the area. Businesses refuse to locate in town. Its a mistake to tear down the hospital ,in the future it will be more important to have than a secondhand store or aothe sub shop. Who has the capital do do this project? Better yet where will the estimated 2 million dollars come from to tear down a perfectly useful hospital?

jr, your not a killjoy at all, it is a real concern. I would maybe suggest that they try and set up the area to better preserve the history of Painesville and make some nice living like on Main St. But the view is a concern and over there may be a problem. I am sure that they could set it up to work for all. As far as the capital, need to get a developer in that wants to take on such a thing, who knows, these are just ideas right? JT
