911 Tribute

City of Painesville Police & Fire Departments to Host 9/11 Ceremony and Dedication of Memorial & Meditation Garden Painesville, Ohio - The Painesville Police and Fire Departments will host a 9/11 Memorial Ceremony commemorating the 10 year anniversary of the terrorist attacks, and will feature the dedication of a 9/11 Memorial and Meditation Garden, highlighted by a steel beam taken from ground zero. It is estimated over 90,000 police, firefighters and EMTs helped with the search and rescue efforts on 9/11. “This ceremony is in remembrance of those that sacrificed their lives that tragic day and to offer praise to our military, police officers and firefighters who for the good of others, dedicate their lives protecting the people of this great nation”, said Police Chief Troy Hager. This past February, the Police and Fire departments obtained World Trade Center artifacts from the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. Fire Chief Mark Mlachak stated “It is our desire to give the artifacts a permanent home so that the public can not only view a piece of the twin towers, but to serve as a constant reminder of the tragic events that occurred on September 11, 2001”. Through the generosity of the community, over $13,000 has been received towards the creation of the Memorial and Meditation Garden. Construction is underway and will be completed in time for the dedication ceremony. The department is now focusing their fundraising efforts on Phase 2 of the memorial; public education. Plans to position an interactive computer station within the fire department that will allow visitors to view a video and digitally browse profiles and photographs of the fallen, newspaper coverage of the attacks and images of nationwide tributes to those that perished fighting for our country since 9/11. The ceremony, less than an hour, includes a traditional rifle salute and a bell ringing ceremony in memory of the fallen firefighters and police officers. Event will pay homage to the extraordinary heroism, commitment and sacrifice of 9/11 victims and emergency first responders, pay special tribute to those that lost their lives serving our country since 9/11 and proudly recognize the brave men and women who protect and serve our community everyday. This is a public ceremony; the community is encouraged to attend. Event will take place at the Painesville City Fire Department located at 28 Mentor Avenue on Sunday, September 11th at 5:00 p.m.

This year's Art in the Park is the 10th year anniversary, and to celebrate this year, the talented photographer Alan Brown will have dynamic photography of the Lake County Court House as it was being constructed in the early 1900's; men hanging on steel beams as they are lifted up to construct the final structure leading to the copper dome. This year's event will also feature fine art paintings, jewelry, pottery, wood sculpture, steel sculpture, glass, fabrics and other unique items that will fascinate you.

Over 50 artists will be on hand with their artwork, and many will be providing demonstrations throughout the event so you can view firsthand how these amazing pieces of art are formed and created. Tri-City Twirlers, who will feature a song from the popular show Glee "Don't Stop Believing," as well as an impressive Fire Baton Twirling demonstration by Jessica Bullis, a Riverside Majorette.

A kid's art contest and sidewalk art contest will be held from 12 pm to 2 pm where students can paint and each child will walk away with a token as well as be entered into the final art contest where prizes are distributed to kids aging from 1 to 16. Kids can also decorate their very own Eat 'N Park cookie as well as listening to storytelling from Master Story Tellers, the theme being The Caribbean. The stories will be read from the Parrot Rescue, with the story selection being 'The House in the Sky,' 'My Island and I: The Nature of the Caribbean,' and 'Mama God, Papa God: A Caribbean Tale.'

The fun-filled event is packed with amazing art, great food from places ranging from The Harry Buffalo to Java Express Coffee Company, live entertainment, and unique opportunities to learn new artistic talents. 911 Memorial Garden Fundraiser

This past winter, the Painesville City Fire Department obtained an artifact from ground zero. It is our desire to utilize this artifact as the centerpiece for a Memorial and Meditation Garden in front of the fire station here in Painesville. The Memorial and Meditation Garden will be for all to visit and reflect upon losses or to seek some solace. This Garden is also to pay respect to those 2,753 victims who lost their lives 10 years ago and to honor local firefighters, law enforcement and military personnel who have died while serving this community.

We have an obligation to give this artifact a permanent home so that the public can view the piece of the twin towers, which once stood as mighty examples of American strength and determination. Martin's Nursery graciously donated their services in designing the garden and now we need to move forward. Our goal is to raise approximately $7,000 in order to make this Memorial and Meditation Garden a reality.

Painesville's Party in the Park event this past weekend enabled us to raise $1,000 towards this project. We are now seeking to fulfill our remaining goal of $6,000 through donations from residents and businesses in our community. We have approximately 4 weeks to raise these funds in order to have the Memorial and Meditation Garden completed in time for the annual 9-11 Memorial ceremony and dedication on September 11, 2011.

No public funds are being utilized for this project.

We need your help to make the Memorial Garden a reality this year. No amount is too small and your generous donation will be publicly acknowledged at our 9-11 memorial ceremony and Memorial Garden dedication event through promotional announcements and prominent note in our program. Donations can either be mailed or dropped off anytime at the Fire Station located at 28 Mentor Avenue.
I welcome the opportunity to speak with you or your organization about this endeavor. Please contact Melissa Soto at 440.392.5852 with questions or to schedule an appointment.

Fundraising effort

Tonight Bella Donna Salon and Spa will be hosting a fundraiser for their owner, Mary Jo. She is participating in the Lifeline Dancing Under the Stars fundraiser. For anyone who doesn't know, Mary Jo is a HUGE supporter of all things Painesville. Get out there and give back to those who give so much to this wonderful City! JT

Anybody out there?

I have been off the wire for a long time. To be honest, time and family obligations have taken over my life and with work being what it is...this took a major backseat. I would like to get things going again if possible and would like to see if there is anyone out there still interested. If so, post your opinion and let me know. I still love this town and have spent much time lately being a Painesville ambassador. I hope that there are more of us out there and hope to hear from you. JT
